"The secret of patience is doing something else in the mean time."
~Proverb~
It IS most interesting that this law is so short! The scant message expresses the underlying simplicity of patience if we would but BE.. Yet, because we all have such a hard time with this one, the very nature of its simplicity tempts us into playing semantic word games that very easily can throw us off the path of its true meaning.
If we are to cultivate patience, we must understand exactly what it is we are trying to foster. Clearly, patience is NOT about waiting around -- to wait, is none other than impatience (a quick dictionary search shows that patience is a noun, while waiting is a verb.) When we cultivate patience we are REFINING (improving) ourselves, while to wait for anything we are in a state of EXPECTancy (anticipation). You have to agree, these are two very different things. Therefore, this law is NOT supposing a state of suspense and uncertainty, but rather it is indicating a period of hidden growth and potential flowering.
Ultimately, we all seem to be agreeing on certain aspects of patience and the cure for its opposite state, they are:
1- in the importance of living in the NOW moment
2- in not attaching ourselves to outcomes
3- by releasing our ego need to control life matters
4- and to do away with the craving of instant gratification
In a nutshell, the real message and the real value of this law is in the recognition that cosmically "to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven".. and the only way to allow for this reality is to persevere without losing heart or by becoming bored.. this is patience.

Reader's comment #1:
Our society is slowly losing the virtue of patience and in our chaotic world today, patience is a rare commodity. Patience is more than the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain without complaint, loss of temper etc. and our ability to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted by delay. We can have the best of intentions, the most fabulous ideas but when we want something to happen NOW we have to go through the natural process of unfolding, waiting and to draw upon patience to strengthen our resolve and effort. Patience becomes the great divider when maturity is required to see the separation of the weak from the strong. During this process we find a clash between will and reason. Will wants to throw everything aside to gain its objective. Reason calls for calm and discernment.
We want a baby but think of the time it takes for a baby to be born. Just because one decides to have a baby NOW does not mean that there are not the intended stages that must be traversed in order for the full baby to come to fruition. There may be problems within the pregnancy, there isn't enough life sustaining energy to allow the child to come to full term. Like a flower blooming, there is no way to rush it. This infinite wisdom is far beyond the limitations of a conceptual or calculating mind. So when we are asked to demonstrate patience, let us view it as a gift. It is allowing us to demonstrate the fullness of our intention, to test the strength of our commitment and resolve.
There are times that we want something to move but pushing through problems can make you feel better temporarily but in the long run it is much more satisfying to flow with the natural cycles and allow the universe to create the perfect place and time for change.
Knowing give us the illusion that we are in control and in charge of our destiny. But sometimes our plans are not exactly working out the way we had thought. It is interesting to look at humanity's constant need of movement and change. We forget to stop and enjoy the moment. So what if things are not moving at the pace we wanted as we cannot have control of every moment and when this happens, it is a signal to stop and re-evaluate our position. Life is not about chasing after a perfect dream and fulfillment comes from knowing yourself internally and being able to choose moment by moment.
Look to the future but play in this moment. All we can do is acknowledge what is going on for us at this moment, share it with others, and enjoy the journey. There is a type of ecstasy when you become one with everything that exists on the planet. Then you will find a new sort of movement. But this will not be the movement of the mind and ego; it will be the movement held in the wisdom of your soul.
On a day-to-day level it is quite amazing how we can become irritated by the most trivial of things despite our better nature, and we can give vent to our anger that are destructive to ourselves and others. Our Masters say that every opportunity to develop anger is also an opportunity to develop patience and urges us to learn to control these feelings through meditation which helps to make us calmer human beings, to be aware and mindful of our feelings, develops within us compassion and loving kindness.
